Asbestos is a natural mineral consisting of microscopic fibers and was widely used in construction from the 1950s to the 1980s because of its strength, abrasion resistance, insulating and fire-resistant properties. It was used in roofing, corrugated sheets, chimney pipes, water pipes, heating systems and sewage pipes, among others.

Dangers of asbestos

While solid asbestos poses no immediate danger, loose asbestos fibers are extremely harmful to health if inhaled or ingested. Before renovation or demolition work begins, it is mandatory to conduct an asbestos inventory to determine if asbestos is present in the property.

Individuals may remove up to 35 square meters of asbestos-containing material themselves, provided no fibers are released. Larger areas and all asbestos removal by companies must be performed by a certified company. The cost of this is the responsibility of the property owner.

Asbestos removal grant

The Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment encourages the removal of asbestos roofs because of the risks to the environment. Between January 4, 2016 and December 31, 2019, a subsidy scheme is available for the removal of asbestos roofs from private individuals, agricultural businesses and non-profit organizations.

The subsidy is €4.50 per m² of asbestos roof removed, with a maximum of €25,000 per address. The roof area must be larger than 35 m².
Roof sheathing is not eligible.
For agricultural companies that combine asbestos removal with the installation of solar panels, there is an additional scheme. Here, the asbestos roof must be at least 250 m² and the solar panels must have a capacity of at least 5 kWp. Again, the subsidy is €4.50 per m², with a maximum of €15,000 per roof.

Applications for both schemes must be submitted within 6 months of asbestos removal, and the grant is paid in arrears.
